What we could not confirm
- Exact current M11 fare
- Touristanbul tour availability this season
Scores
- Getting there
- Iranians enter Turkey visa-free for up to 90 days in any 180. The M11 metro runs to Gayrettepe and Halkali (about 35 TL with an Istanbulkart, 6:00 to midnight); Havaist buses and taxis take 60 to 90 minutes to the centre. Iranian bank cards do not work, so carry cash or buy an Istanbulkart with lira.
- Terminal and queues
- One huge terminal; all airlines including Iran Air, Mahan, Turkish and Pegasus use it. Walking distances are long and passport control can take 30 to 60 minutes at peak.
- Connections and transit
- The best transit hub for Iranians: no visa needed airside, hundreds of onward destinations and Turkish Airlines connections that stay in one terminal. Allow at least 90 minutes between flights.
- Food, rest, SIM, prayer room
- Prayer rooms (mescit), plenty of halal food, sleep pods, lounges and SIM kiosks (Turkcell, Vodafone) in arrivals. Prices are high; a coffee costs several times the city price.
- Delays and cancellations
- Cirium named Istanbul Airport its Platinum airport for 2025 and Turkish Airlines one of the most improved carriers. Iranian carriers flying here still carry their own delay record.
What is good
- Visa-free and the widest choice of onward flights
- Metro to the city since 2023
- Top-rated for on-time performance in 2025
What is not
- Long walks and long passport lines
- Expensive food and shops
Tips
- Buy an Istanbulkart at the metro station with cash; it also works on buses and ferries
- If you have a long layover, the free Touristanbul city tour is available to connecting passengers
- Exchange some rial to lira in Iran; airport exchange rates are poor
