Visa and entry

Visa requiredPopular destination

Apply at an embassy or visa centre before travelling.

Visa required in advance under the common EU rule; the German Foreign Office pages could not be opened on the check date, so the details above come from the EU visa pages.

What we could not confirm

  • The German Federal Foreign Office and the German embassy in Tehran pages could not be opened on the check date; the current Tehran application channel (embassy appointment system, VisaMetric or TLScontact) and its waiting list were not verified.
  • Annex I of Regulation 2018/1806 itself could not be loaded from EUR-Lex; Iran's listing is taken from the EU pages that point to it.

Conditions

  • Iran is on the EU list of countries whose nationals need a visa (Annex I of Regulation 2018/1806), so a short-stay Schengen visa must be obtained before travel.
  • Apply at the German embassy in Tehran (or the external service provider it names) with an appointment; you can apply at the earliest 6 months before the trip and at the latest 15 days before.
  • Fingerprints and a photo are taken at the appointment unless you gave fingerprints for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months.
  • EU rule for processing: normally 15 calendar days, extendable to 45 days when more checks are needed; appointment waiting times in Tehran come on top.
  • Fee 90 EUR per adult (45 EUR for children aged 6 to 11, free under 6) plus any service-provider fee; the fee is not refunded if the visa is refused.
  • Travel medical insurance of at least 30,000 EUR covering all Schengen states is mandatory.

Plan the trip

Before you book

  • Your passport should be valid for at least six months after the trip; many borders refuse less.
  • Exit tax is paid before leaving Iran; the amount depends on how many trips you made this year.
  • Iranian bank cards do not work abroad: plan cash or a card from outside Iran.
