Visa and entry
United States: entry rules for Iranians
Entry closed
Entry or transit is refused to Iranian passport holders right now.
Entry of Iranian nationals as immigrants and nonimmigrants has been fully suspended since 9 June 2025; a December 2025 proclamation (effective 1 January 2026) keeps the suspension and narrowed the exceptions.
Checked 3 November 2026Official sources
What we could not confirm
- Proclamations issued after December 2025 were not checked.
Conditions
- Remaining exceptions: lawful permanent residents, dual nationals travelling on a non-designated passport, diplomatic/A/G/NATO visas, athletes and support staff at major sporting events, US-government Special Immigrant Visas, and persecuted religious or ethnic minorities.
- Family immigrant visas (IR-1/CR-1/IR-2/IR-5) and adoption visas are no longer categorical exceptions; only case-by-case waivers remain.
- Visas issued before 1 January 2026 are not revoked.
Plan the trip
Before you book
- Your passport should be valid for at least six months after the trip; many borders refuse less.
- Exit tax is paid before leaving Iran; the amount depends on how many trips you made this year.
- Iranian bank cards do not work abroad: plan cash or a card from outside Iran.
