Getting there

Iranians can get a Russian e-visa online (single entry, up to 30 days) or travel visa-free for up to 15 days in an accredited tour group of 5 to 50 people. The Aeroexpress train runs from Terminals B and C to Belorussky station in 46 minutes, from 470 RUB online or about 650 RUB at the station; the Aeroexpress bus to Khovrino metro takes about 20 minutes for 250 RUB, and a taxi starts around 2,000 RUB. Visa and Mastercard do not work in Russia and neither do Iranian cards, so bring cash to change into rubles.

Terminal and queues

Six terminals: B and C in the northern complex (Aeroflot and most international flights, served by Aeroexpress) and D, E and F in the south, linked by an underground interterminal train. Signs are in Russian and English. The airport was not in the Skytrax top 100 for 2026. Allow extra time if your flights use different terminal groups.

Connections and transit

Russia allows visa-free transit of under 24 hours if you stay in the international transit zone with a confirmed onward ticket; the e-visa itself does not cover transit. Mahan Air flies Tehran to Sheremetyevo about three times a week and Russia's aviation authority lifted its Iran flight suspension on 20 April 2026, but check the current schedule. Onward choice is limited because Russian carriers cannot fly to the EU, so Moscow works as a hub for Russia, Central Asia and East Asia, not for Europe.

Food, rest, SIM, prayer room

Prayer rooms, lounges, capsule hotels and shops are reported in the terminals, but the airport's own site could not be loaded, so locations are unconfirmed. Russian SIM cards need passport registration; buy one from an official operator kiosk. Prices inside are high and foreign cards do not work, so carry rubles.

Delays and cancellations

Moscow airspace closes repeatedly during drone attacks: on 21 July 2025 Sheremetyevo cancelled over 170 flights in one day, and on 18 June 2026 it cancelled 110 and delayed 147. Rosaviatsia has said it will not compensate airlines, and passengers have waited hours on parked aircraft. Do not book tight onward connections and keep a day of slack.
