Vienna International Airport

Vienna (Schwechat), Austria

Vienna has two gate buildings: Terminal 1 (gates B, C and D) and Terminal 3 (gates F and G). Gates B, C and F serve Schengen flights; D and G serve the rest. The airport says distances are short. A free bus links the C/D and F/G gates, but it stops on the Schengen side. Iranian passports need an airport transit visa here unless exempt.

Airport staff speak English at every airport in these guides. Showing the help card, or the title of the step you are on, is enough; you do not need the local language.

Both flights on ONE ticket

Your bags go through. You only change planes.

  1. Leave the plane with all your hand luggage

On one booking, the airport says your checked bags normally go straight to your final airport, and you usually get your next boarding pass at your first airport. You do not go to baggage claim. If you are not sure, check your bag tag receipt or ask the airline staff at the gate.

  2. Find your next gate on a screen

Look at the flight information screens for your next flight number. Vienna says your gate is shown at least 70 minutes before departure. The screens also give walking distances, worked out for people who walk slowly. Then follow the signs with your gate letter (B, C, D, F or G). Do not follow signs to baggage claim or the exit.

  3. Passport control depends on your next flight

If you came from outside the Schengen area (for example from Istanbul, Doha or Dubai) and your next flight goes to a Schengen country, you must pass Austrian passport control, and you need a Schengen visa. If both flights are outside the Schengen area and you stay in the transit area, there is normally no passport control. An Iranian passport still needs an airport transit visa for this, unless you are exempt (see the passport note). If you have no Schengen visa, do not go through passport control. If you are unsure, show your boarding pass to staff and ask.

  4. Expect a security check

Vienna's connection page has a section called 'Transfer with renewed security check' and asks you to allow enough time and follow the staff. Have your boarding pass ready. You walk through a metal detector and your bag is X-rayed. If you have a pacemaker, tell the staff before you are checked.

  5. No boarding pass yet? Ask at the gate or a transfer desk

The airport says you can get your next boarding pass at your departure gate or at a transfer desk. It does not say where the transfer desks are, so ask any airport or airline staff member to show you the nearest one. Show your passport and ticket and ask, 'Where is my gate?' Do not go through passport control to find a desk.

  6. Changing between D and G gates? Ask before you take the bus

A free bus links the C/D gates and the F/G gates. The airport says it runs daily from 5:30 to 23:30, about every 10 minutes, and the ride takes about 4 minutes. Its signs say 'Gates C D' or 'Gates F G' with a bus symbol. But the airport's own leaflets put both bus stops on the Schengen side, before passport control, so you may not be able to use the bus. If you have no Schengen visa, do not go through passport control. Show your boarding pass to airport or airline staff and ask for the transit route to your gate.

  7. If you are lost or the gate is not shown yet

Stay inside the gate area and sit near a flight screen. Ask any airport staff member, because the airport says its staff also walk around the terminal and gate areas to help. The airport's Contact Center is +43 1 7007 0 (6:00 to 22:00). Show your boarding pass and ask for help.

  8. If walking is hard, ask for help where you are

If you asked your airline for assistance before the trip, a helper should meet you at the plane or the gate. If you did not, tell the cabin crew before you land, or ask the gate staff. Stay where you are and do not go back to check-in. Help is free and runs around the clock, but without notice you may wait up to 45 minutes.

Flights on SEPARATE tickets

You collect your bags and check in again. Allow much more time.

  1. Check your visa before you book

With separate tickets and checked bags, you must enter Austria to collect your bags and check in again. To enter Austria, an Iranian passport needs a Schengen visa. The Austrian embassy in Tehran does not take Schengen visa applications at present, so Iranians must apply at another Austrian embassy or consulate. If you have only hand luggage and already hold your next boarding pass, the airport says you can go straight to your new gate, but you still need an airport transit visa unless you are exempt. If you have checked bags and no Schengen visa, do not book separate tickets through Vienna. If you are unsure, ask the embassy or your airline before you book.

  2. Follow the signs to passport control

Coming from outside the Schengen area, you pass Austrian passport control. People with a short-stay (Schengen) visa, and visitors who need no visa, are now registered in the EU Entry/Exit System: fingerprints and a photo. Use a self-service machine if staff send you to one. Expect waiting, and the airport apologises for possible delays. If you are unsure which line to join, ask a staff member.

  3. Collect your bags

Go to the baggage claim and take your bags from the belt for your flight. If your bag does not arrive, go to your airline's lost-and-found desk. Do this before you leave the hall. If you carry more than 10,000 euros in cash, you must declare it to customs.

  4. Go to departures and find your airline's terminal

Your airline decides the terminal. On 5 November 2026 the airport's list showed Austrian Airlines, Emirates and Qatar Airways in Terminal 3, and Turkish Airlines in Terminal 1. The screens show your check-in counter up to 3 hours before departure. If you cannot find it, ask at an Airport Service counter (Terminal 1, Terminal 3, or the arrivals hall).

  5. Check in, then pass security and passport control

Drop your bag and get your boarding pass. Then go through security. If your next flight leaves the Schengen area, you also pass passport control after security. Then find your gate on the screens. If you are unsure where to go, ask any staff member.

  6. Allow plenty of time

Vienna says that on separate tickets it is your job to allow enough time, including for delays, baggage claim and checking in again. The airport asks you to arrive 2 hours before a flight of up to 6 hours, and 3 hours before a longer one. Add the landing, passport control and bag wait. As plain advice for an older traveller, leave at least 5 hours between flights.

  7. If you miss your second flight

Go to your second airline's check-in counter straight away, or phone the airline. The airport says that on separate tickets it is your job to allow enough time, so ask the airline what it can offer you. Keep the airline's phone number on paper; the airport's airline list gives the numbers. If you cannot find the counter, ask at an Airport Service counter.

  8. If you leave the airport for the city

The S7 train goes to Wien Mitte in about 25 minutes, every 30 minutes, from 4.10 euros. Buy tickets at the ÖBB counter in the arrivals hall or at the machines. The CAT is currently running as a coach, not a train: Wien Mitte in 21 minutes, 14.90 euros one way, with a CAT counter in the arrivals hall.

Passport control

Austria's foreign ministry says Iranian nationals need an airport transit visa (visa A) even to stay in the international transit area of an Austrian airport, unless they are exempt. Iran is also on the EU's common list. Under the EU Visa Code (consolidated version of 28 June 2024), you do not need it if you hold a valid Schengen visa, or a long-stay visa or residence permit from a Schengen country. A visa or residence permit from Ireland or Cyprus also counts. A valid visa for the United States, Canada or Japan counts when you travel to or from that country, or on to any other non-EU country. Certain residence permits from Andorra, Canada, Japan, San Marino, the United Kingdom and the United States count too, and family members of EU citizens are exempt. Going from a non-Schengen flight to a Schengen flight, or the other way round, means Austrian passport control, and to enter the Schengen area an Iranian passport needs a Schengen visa. Between two non-Schengen flights there is normally no passport control if you stay in the transit area. But at Vienna the free bus between the C/D and F/G gates stops on the Schengen side, before passport control. If you have no Schengen visa, do not go through passport control. Show your boarding pass to airport or airline staff and ask for the transit route to your gate. People with a short-stay visa, and visitors who need no visa, are registered in the EU Entry/Exit System (fingerprints and photo). The Austrian embassy in Tehran restarted some consular work from 1 September 2026 but does not take Schengen visa applications. Check with the embassy or your airline before you book.

Getting around

Terminal 1 leads to gates B, C and D, and Terminal 3 to gates F and G. Terminal 1A is a check-in hall for some airlines. Gates B, C and F serve Schengen flights; D and G serve flights outside Schengen. The airport's prayer room page lists a room in Terminal 3, level 3, on the non-Schengen side, and its SKY Lounge leaflet shows the F gate area on level 1 of Terminal 3. On 5 November 2026 the airport's departures list showed Qatar Airways leaving from Terminal 3 (gate G36) and Turkish Airlines from Terminal 1 (gates D22 and D28), with Emirates checking in at Terminal 3. Gates change, so always check the screens. A free bus links the C/D and F/G gates, every 10 minutes from 5:30 to 23:30, about 4 minutes on board. Both of its stops are on the Schengen side, before passport control. If you have no Schengen visa, do not go through passport control. Show your boarding pass to airport or airline staff and ask for the transit route to your gate. The airport says gates are close together but gives no walking times. The screens show walking distances for slow walkers. Some gates are bus gates: a bus takes you to the plane. People who booked assistance can be driven between terminals and to the plane in special minibuses.

Wheelchair and special help here

Tell your airline or travel agent you need help when you book, and at least 48 hours before departure. Vienna says this lets the airline pass your request on in time. Say what you need: a wheelchair, help with steps, or someone to walk with you between flights. Ask for help on every flight of your trip, and on each ticket if you have separate tickets. If you are changing planes and did not book help, do not go back to check-in. Stay where you are and ask the gate staff or the cabin crew. Without notice, the airport's target is to reach you within 45 minutes instead of 20.

If you booked help, staff meet you at the plane or the gate. The airport's target is within 20 minutes, or 45 minutes if you did not book. Mobility counters, where you can call for help yourself, are in the arrivals hall and in Terminal 3, with hearing loops and screens in sign language. They are on the public side, outside the transit area. If you are changing planes, do not go looking for them: stay where you are and ask the gate staff or the cabin crew. Special minibuses can take you from terminal to terminal or to the plane.

Assistance is free and runs around the clock. Staff use wheelchairs for long distances and, where possible, small electric carts. The airport also promises shorter waits at check-in, security and the gate for people using this service. In Terminal 1 and Terminal 3 there is a wide separate entrance to security for people needing help and for families. There are 46 accessible washrooms. The airport gives out Sunflower products for hidden disabilities at its three Airport Service counters, 5:30 to 22:15. These counters are on the public side, so a connecting passenger cannot reach them without passing passport control. Sunflower products do not give you priority, but staff will know you may need more time. A personal attendant (Premium Services) can be booked in the airport's online shop.

Where to ask for help

Airport Service counters: one on the departures level of Terminal 1, one on the departures level of Terminal 3, and one in the arrivals hall. They are on the public side, outside the transit area. The airport says its staff also walk around the terminal and gate areas to help, so if you are changing planes, ask them or the gate staff. Email: services@viennaairport.com. The Contact Center and flight information line is +43 1 7007 0, from 6:00 to 22:00. The airport says its medical team and emergency doctor are available around the clock (+43 1 7007 22245). There is a pharmacy in Terminal 1, level 1, but it is also on the public side, so a connecting passenger should ask the gate staff for help instead. We found no official statement that staff speak Persian or Arabic, so keep a written note of your next flight and gate to show staff.

Rest and comfort

Prayer rooms are open to people of all faiths. For passengers with a boarding pass there is one in Terminal 3, level 3, on the non-Schengen side, and one in the Plaza. A third room, in Terminal 3, level 2, is in the public area and open to everyone 24 hours, but a connecting passenger cannot reach it without entering Austria. Paid lounges for passengers of any airline: the SKY Lounge in Terminal 3 (49 euros, 4:30 to 23:00) and the VIENNA Lounge in Terminal 1 (59 euros, 4:30 to 22:00), for up to 3 hours, with relax chairs and showers. The VIENNA Lounge lets you in only from 3.5 hours before your departure. Both lounges are after security but before passport control, on the Schengen side, so a transit passenger without a Schengen visa cannot reach them. Lounges take debit or credit cards. Money: Austria uses the euro. Cash machines for passengers are at the D, F and G gates, and more are in the public halls. They take Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, UnionPay and other international cards. The airport's card list names only international brands, so bring euros in cash or a card issued outside Iran. Interchange exchange offices are at the D and G gates, Terminal 1, Terminal 3 and arrivals.

My help card

Print the card on its own, fill in the lines by hand, and keep it in your pocket.

I am traveling alone. I need help to find my connecting flight. Please show me the way, or call someone who can help me. Thank you.

You can type the details here before printing. They stay on this device only.

Partly checked against official pages.

What we could not confirm (20)
  • We could not confirm whether Austrian Airlines flies to Tehran now. Austrian's own pages, seen only in search summaries because austrian.com blocked our reader, said Tehran flights were suspended, with end dates of 30 April and later 24 October, and Austrian's half-year report of 4 August 2026 named Tehran among suspended routes. Vienna Airport's arrivals and departures lists on 5 November 2026 showed no Tehran flight in the next 26 hours. Austrian's booking pages still show Vienna to Tehran fares, which does not prove the flights run.
  • We could not confirm how a passenger without a Schengen visa moves between the D gates and the G gates without passing passport control. The airport's shuttle leaflets put both bus stops on the Schengen side, and no official page we read describes a transit route between D and G.
  • We could not confirm the English wording or colour of the transfer signs. The only sign text seen on official material is 'Gates C D' and 'Gates F G' with a bus symbol, on the shuttle leaflets. The airport's page is titled 'Connecting Flights', but we did not see a photo of a 'Transfer' or 'Connecting Flights' sign.
  • We could not confirm walking times between piers. The airport says only that distances are short. No official minutes were found for B to F, D to G, or similar walks.
  • We could not confirm the shuttle bus hours and ride time, because official sources differ: the airport's page says 5:30 to 23:30 and about 4 minutes; one airport leaflet says about 2 minutes; Austrian Airlines (search summary only) says 5:30 to 22:35. We also could not confirm how passengers move between C/D and F/G when the bus is not running.
  • We could not confirm whether every transfer passenger is screened again at security, or which arrivals skip it. The airport's page only has the heading 'Transfer with renewed security check'.
  • We could not confirm that the airport's rule allowing liquids in containers up to 2000 ml in the cabin bag applies at every transfer checkpoint. Rules at the next airport may also be stricter, so it is left out of the steps.
  • We could not confirm these Austrian Airlines details: transfer counters near the B, C, D, F and G gates; F gates on level 1 and G gates on level 3; its minimum connecting time (25, 30 or 35 minutes on different page versions); its request for at least 48 hours' notice for assistance; that its airport wheelchair service is free; or any phone line for its assistance service. austrian.com blocked our reader, so we saw these only in search summaries. The number +43 5 1766 1000 appears on the airport's page only as Austrian's ground handling contact, not as an assistance line.
  • We could not confirm which gates arriving flights from Tehran, Istanbul, Doha or Dubai use. Arrival lists do not show gates. The gate examples come from one day's departures list (5 November 2026).
  • We could not confirm the opening hours of the Airport Service counters beyond the Sunflower page (5:30 to 22:15), or exactly where they are: the Airport-Info page and the Sunflower page describe their places differently. None of them is described as inside the transit area.
  • We could not confirm whether a connecting passenger can reach the mobility counters or the Terminal 1 pharmacy without leaving the transit area, or where exactly the mobility counters are beyond 'arrivals hall' and 'Terminal 3'.
  • We could not confirm whether the Plaza prayer room is on the Schengen or non-Schengen side. The airport gives its place only as 'the Plaza', which on the airport map is where the B, C and D gates meet.
  • We could not confirm the opening hours of the Interchange exchange offices. The official page we read shows none, and it says there are seven branches but lists five.
  • We could not confirm that Iranian bank cards fail at Vienna. The airport's card lists name only international brands.
  • We could not confirm where an Iranian passport holder applies for an airport transit visa (visa A) for Austria while the embassy in Tehran does not take Schengen visa applications. The embassy page covers Schengen visas (C) and national visas (D) only.
  • We could not confirm whether staff at information or transfer desks speak Persian or Arabic.
  • We could not confirm an official minimum time between flights on separate tickets. The 5-hour margin is plain advice, not an official rule.
  • We could not confirm what the second airline must do if you miss its flight on a separate ticket. No official page we read says whether it must wait for you or rebook you.
  • We could not confirm whether the airport's Sunflower products are free. The Sunflower page does not say.
  • We could not confirm that the Zzzleepandgo sleeping pods in the Terminal 3 public area still exist. They appear only in a 2022 airport press release, so they are not mentioned.

Airports change signs, gates and rules. This guide is general help, not an official instruction. Always follow the staff and the screens, and check with your airline.
